This week, we’re celebrating the International Week of the Deaf, and this year’s theme is With Sign Language, I Am Equal.
I’ve dedicated this post to the beauty of sign language…enjoy, my fellow signers!
1 – You don’t have to shout to make yourself heard in a nightclub.
2 – You don’t have to use your voice.
3 – You can communicate underwater!
4 – You feel right at home with fellow signers.
5 – Saying ‘I love you’ becomes visual.
6 – You meet new people who also share your love for sign language!
7 – You are given an opportunity to experience a new community, that is the Deaf community.
8 – Babies can sign, too! It’ll help their language development in so many ways.
9 – You don’t have to wait until you’re done chewing – although meals do take a lot longer to finish!
10 – The librarian doesn’t have to tell you to be quiet if you’re signing 😉
11 – Communicating across the field becomes easier whilst playing sports.
12 – Language barriers are removed when you travel because you’re able to visually communicate with anyone.
13 – You become bilingual, trilingual, or even multilingual!
14 – Storytelling becomes visual and enthralling.
15 – You can have secret conversations (as long there’s no-one else in the room who knows sign language!).
Happy IWD!

Love this post!
Monolingual means one language so makes no sense in the context. Otherwise good article!
Whoops – thanks for bringing this to my attention! I’ll change it 🙂
